Grand Rapids, MICH – The Saints women's lacrosse team traveled North to Grand Rapids, Michigan to take of the Knights of Calvin University. On Wednesday, March 16th, Siena Heights saw its first win of the 2022 season beating the Knights 20 – 15.
The blue and yellow put up six goals in the first three quarters. Marissa Cirino (6 for 7) led SHU with six goals, four assists, and two ground balls. Alexis Nicole found the netting five times out of her seven shots on goal. Courtney Frankfurth, Emily Pringle, Madison Spell, and Hannah Merrick each netted two balls. Amber Soukup saw her first goal of the season shooting one for one on the night. Goalie Lucy Stedam faced 26 shots and saved three.
At the 13:43 mark, Merrick sank the first goal and was quickly followed by Pringle. Later into the quarter, Frankfurth caused a turnover and went downfield to assist Cirino, allowing the Saints to score three goals in less than five minutes. Totaling six points in the first quarter of the game with a score of 6 to 3.
Calvin scored first in the second but soon points were traded between the teams. Until SHU saw a run of five goals, started by Cirino at the 6:40 mark, to dominate the remaining six minutes of the half, going up 12 to 5. Siena held the Knights to only, two goals during the second quarter.
Calvin found a rhythm in the third putting up four points, thanks to a few fouls from the Saints. Not to be detoured, Nicole sank a man-up shot and was followed a minute later by Soukup with a free position shot. On a roll, SHU dropped three more goals in the last minute of the third quarter.
Again, the Knights started strong in the final quarter and found the back of the net five times but ultimately came up short against the Saints to end the game 20-15.
