#6 Lawrence Tech Tops Saints in WHAC Tournament Championship

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The 4-Seeded Siena Heights women's lacrosse team lost the WHAC Tournament Championship 17-10 against 3-Seeded Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon. Madison Spell led the Saints scoring four goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED, 

The Saints opened the scoring a minute into the first half as Madison Spell found the back of the net. The Blue Devils went on to earn four straight goals to put them in the lead. Madison Spell had her second goal of the game at the 16:18 mark and Lawrence Tech's Abbey Smentowski put one past Elizabeth Elliott off a pass from Gabi Larkin for the 5-2 lead. SHU had three straight goals to tie the game as Madison Spell, Marissa Cirino, and Katherine Tapia netted balls with an assist from Tori Tidswell. Each team scored one more goal in the first half from Siena's Emily Pringle assisted by Tori Tidswell and Lawrence Tech's Bella Van Buren from Gabi Larkin with the game tied 6-6 at the half.

The Saints took the lead in the opening 30 seconds of the second half when Jenna Sommerville slotted a free position shot past Dorie Coggin. The Blue Devils were hot as they scored six straight goals gaining a 12-7 lead. SHU broke their goal streak as Marissa Cirino found the back of the net off a pass from Emily Pringle. Lawrence Tech kept the momentum going earning three straight goals updating the score to 15-8. Jenna Sommerville netted her second ball of the game off a free position shot for Siena. Lawrence Tech had two more goals in the second half and SHU had one more from Madison Spell but they ran out of time earning the Blue Devils the WHAC Championship. 

TOP SAINTS

Madison Spell also recorded four shots on goal and five draw controls.

Marissa Cirino earned two goals, eight shots on goal, one draw control, and two caused turnovers.

Elizabeth Elliott made 13 saves off 30 shots faced between the pipes.

THE OPPOSITION

• Abbey Smentowski led the Blue Devils with four goals, one assist, six shots on goal, one groundball, and one caused turnover.

• Bella Van Buren recorded three goals, one assist, five shots on goal, two groundballs, seven draw controls, and two caused turnovers.

• Dorie Coggin had 11 saves off 21 shots faced in goal.

UP NEXT

The Saints wait to see if they earned a bid to the NAIA National Tournament. The team finished the season with a 7-3 overall record and a 4-2 conference record.
