Saints Upset 1st-Seeded Concordia Advancing to WHAC Championship

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 9th-Ranked Siena Heights women's lacrosse team advances to the WHAC Championship winning the semifinal 16-11 against 8th-Ranked Concordia (Mich.) on Thursday afternoon. Jenna Sommerville led the Saints as she earned six goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints set the pace scoring three straight goals in the first eight minutes of the game from Jenna Sommerville, Emily Pringle, and Marrissa Cirino. Concordia cut the deficit to one goal as Nicole Bordo found the back of the net twice as Taylor Nesbitt had an assist. SHU gained a five-goal lead when Jenna Sommerville had a pair of goals with an assist from Alexis Nicole with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Cardinals earned one more goal in the first half from Madisyn Fox that was assisted by Yasmin Saraiva-Meissner. Siena put two more goals up on the board at intermission with the 7-3 lead.

The Saints were on a roll netting five straight balls from Jenna Sommerville, Katherine Tapia, Madison Spell, and Emily Pringle as Katherine Tapia, Madison Spell, and Marissa Cirino had assists. The teams went back and forth for eight minutes each scoring two goals but SHU was still had a 14-5 lead. Concordia found their momentum putting four past Elizabeth Elliott as Madalyn Fields, Greyson Papp, and Cassandra Allard had goals updating the score to 14-9. Each team respectively scored two more goals in the half making it a close game but Siena walked away with the win.

TOP SAINTS

Jenna Sommerville also recorded seven shots on goal.

Marissa Cirino had two goals, three assists, five shots on goal, two groundballs, and one draw control.

Emily Pringle and Katherine Tapia respectively earned two goals.

Elizabeth Elliott (W, 4-3) made 15 saves off 26 shots faced between the pipes.

THE OPPOSITION

• Greyson Papp led the Cardinals with three goals, one assist, four shots on goal, four groundballs, and one caused turnover.

• Alyssa Lundy tallied three goals and one assist.

• Nicole Bordo recorded two goals.

• Amanda Archer (L, 7-1) had seven saves off 23 shots faced in net.
