Saints Upset 10th Ranked Marian on the Road in Season Opener

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Siena Heights women's lacrosse team pulled away from the tenth-ranked Knights of Marian University on Tuesday night. Marissa Cirino (Jr. | Canton, Mich.) led the Saints with four goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints took a 3-0 lead within the first ten minutes of the game as Cirino scored two goals and Jenna Sommerville (Sr. | Clarkston, Mich.) scored a goal. The Knights responded as Ashlynn Gray netted a ball at the 18:55 mark to put them on the board 3-1. Sommerville scored her second and third goals of the game that sparked six-straight goals for SHU as Cirino scored her third goal of the game and Emily Pringle (So. | Novi, Mich.) scored three goals as they pulled ahead 9-1. Marian was unable to score another goal in the first half sending both teams to the locker room at the half. 

The Saints kept the momentum going as they scored two goals in the first eight minutes of the second half as Cirino earned her fourth goal of the game and Katherine Tapia (Sr. | Saline, Mich.) recorded her only goal of the game to update the score 11-1. The remainder of the half was a defensive battle as neither team scored a goal until the Knights found the back of the net with one second left in the game as Breanna DeJong scored off an assist from Ambrosia Johnson that sealed the 11-2 victory for the Saints. 

SHU was solid in net as Elizabeth Elliott (Sr. | Canton, Mich.) made 19 of the 21 shots she faced. Marian outshot the Saints 27-19 but failed to make many of those shots count. 

TOP SAINTS

• Cirino scored her four goals on six shots, five of which were on goal. She tallied two groundballs, two draw controls, and one caused turnover.

• Sommerville netted three balls off of four shots on goal.

• Pringle found the back of the net three times from four shots on goal.

THE OPPOSITION

• Breanna DeJong scored the Knights' lone goal of the game. 

• Ambrosia Johnson had the assist from Breanna DeJong's goal.

•  Grace Moenning made five saves of the 16 shots she faced between the pipes for Marian.
