Women's Lacrosse Earns First Win of Season against (RV) Ave Maria in Ohio

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The (RV) Siena Heights women's lacrosse team earned their first win of the 2020 season against (RV) Ave Maria (Fla.) at Franciscan University, on Thursday afternoon. Marissa Cirino (Junior, Canton, Mich.) led the Saints as she broke the school record of most points in a game with 12. She tallied eight goals, four assists, three ground balls and draw controls, and two caused turnovers in the winning effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints got things rolling with a goal at the 29:10 mark as Jenna Sommerville (Junior, Clarkston, Mich.) scored off an assist by Cirino. The Gyrenes knotted thing up with a goal by Calena Carabelli at 27:30 on the clock. Siena regained the lead, 4-1, as Cirino scored three goals in a row at the 22:04, 16:03, and 11:15 marks with her last goal assisted by Katherine Tapia (Senior, Saline, Mich.). Siena scored five more goals in the first half by Tapia at 9:27, Cirino at 9:09 and 7:55, Sommerville at 6:54, and Natalie Williams (Senior, South Lyon, Mich.) at 6:39 and 3:43 with assists by Cirino. Emma Davis for Ave Maria scored a goal with 47 seconds left in the first half as the Saints were looking at a 10-2 lead heading into intermission. 

The Gyrenes came out striking in the second half as Aiyanah Simms scored a goal at the 29:19 mark. Siena answered with three goals in a row at the 28:28, 27:24, and 24:46 marks by Sommerville, Cirino, and Williams with assists from Cirino and Tapia. Ave Maria responded with two goals in a row within the 28th minute that were both free-position shots from Davis and Simms cutting the margin to eight goals. The Saints scored goals at 21:56 and 17:10 from Cirino and Sommerville with an assist by Williams. The Gyrenes scored four more goals in the second half by Michelle Tran at 15:25, Alexa Keeler, and Simms at 8:41 and 0:01. Siena ended the game with four more goals by Catherine Androwski (Freshman, Las Vegas, Mich.), Cirino, Williams, and Lauren Kombol (Sophmore, Bellingham, Wash.) with assists from Alexis Nicole (Junior, Portage, Mich.) and Kombol to give them the 19-9 victory.

TOP SAINTS

• Cirino had a team-high of eight goals and four assists.

• Williams earned four goals, one assist, and one ground ball.

• Sommerville finished with four goals.

Elizabeth Elliott (W, 1-1) (Junior, Canton, Mich.) finished with five saves in the 60 minutes of play between the pipes.

THE OPPOSITION

• Simma led the Gyrenes with four goals, one ground ball, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers.

• Davis earned two goals, one ground ball, four draw controls, and caused two turnovers.

• Kaylee Wesolowski made nine saves during her 60 minutes of play in the losing effort.
