Women's Hoops Rolls Past IU East In SHU Holiday Tourney Opener

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's basketball team started with an 11-point run and rolled to a 98-76 victory over Indiana East in the opening game of the Siena Heights Holiday Tournament at the SHU Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

Peyton Banks led the Saints with 20 points and nine rebounds. She had five points during SHU's initial 11-0 run. Siena Heights' largest lead was its 61-31 advantage at halftime.

Sha'kyia Parker added 18 points and eight assists while E'anna Won contributed 13 points. Jillian Gelso scored 12 points and Kayla Hinton compiled nine points, nine rebounds and six assists.

As a team, Siena Heights recorded its highest point total of the season, just one point more than the 97 the Saints had in a win over Grace Christian on Nov. 5. The Saints made 11 3-pointers, equaling the team's previous season-high, which also came against Grace Christian.

The early 11-point stretch was part of a 19-3 run by Siena Heights that saw Banks hit three 3s while Hinton and Gelso connected on one trey apiece.

IU East chipped away in the second half, pulling within 17 points early in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as the Red Wolves could get. Caitlin McEldowney was IU East's leading scorer with 17 points.

The Saints will be in action next on Friday when they host Saint Francis (Ill.) for a 6 p.m. contest on the third night of the SHU Holiday Tournament. IU East and Saint Francis will meet on Thursday.
