Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Women's Basketball to Win to Open Thanksgiving Tournament

ADRIAN, MICH. – The Siena Heights Women's Basketball Team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Governors State by a score of 59-49.

The Saints saw eight of their nine players to see the floor score between five and twelve points on the night.  Leading the way was Kayla Hinton who had a team high 12 points.  Allye Minor, Peyton Banks, and Olivia DeLong each chipped in eight points with Sha'kyia Parker adding seven points, Jillian Gelso adding six points, and E'Anna Won and Eva Alcock each tallying five points.  Banks and Alcok led the way with eight and seven rebounds respectively, Minot had a team high five assists with Won adding five steals.

The first quarter was a low scoring affair, Siena Heights jumped out to a 7-1 lead before a 6-0 run by the Jaguars tied the game up.  Heading into the 1st quarter break, the Saints held a narrow 10-9 lead.  The second quarter saw SHU pull away after falling behind 12-11, a 15-0 run over the next six minutes of play created a 14 point cushion, the lead was 13 points heading into halftime.  Siena Heights extended the lead to 14 points at the end of the third quarter with Governors State fighting back in the fourth quarter, however, they were never able to pull back closer than a ten point margin.

For the game, the Saints outshot the Jaguars by a margin of 37.5% to 30.2%.  They held an edge of five in the turnover battle and outscored the Jaguars by 12 points in the paint.

Coach Sue Syljebeck said, "Today was a good show of our ability to have a very balanced scoring attack, it shows the strength of our team when we have the ability for everyone to step up and put points on the board."

In the early game of the SHU Thanksgiving Tournament, Lawrence Tech defeated Keiser by a score of 75-67.  The tournament will wrap up on Sunday with Lawrence Tech taking on Governors State at 2 pm followed by Siena Heights and Keiser at 4 pm.
