Women's Basketball Rebounds With Blowout Win Over Cornerstone

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's basketball team bounced back from Wednesday's tough loss with an 85-62 blowout win over Cornerstone inside the SHU Fieldhouse on Saturday evening. The Saints (6-1, 3-1 WHAC) improve to 3-1 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play with the victory.

Peyton Banks led the Saints with her fourth double-double of the season as she led SHU with 20 points, 15 rebounds, and three steals. Sha'kyia Parker finished with 19 points in the win. E'Anna Won had 10 points and a team-high four assists in the winning effort. 

Cornerstone hit a three to jump ahead 3-2 in the opening two minutes of play. The Saints retook the lead with two free throws before losing it again via a layup by the Golden Eagles at 8:02. A three-point jumper by Parker allowed SHU to recapture the lead for the final time, 7-5, with 6:39 left in the opening quarter. Parkers shot from trey also sparked a 7-0 run that pushed the Saints' advantage to 11-5. Two free throws and a layup pushed things to 15-7. Banks made two free throws, and Anaya Powell made a three to extend the lead to 20-9 with under two minutes in the first frame. Layups from Banks and Olivia DeLong gave SHu the 24-13 lead going into the second.

Four-straight points from the visitors cut the Saint lead to seven points (24-17) before back-to-back three-point jumpers put the Saints up by double-digits again, 39-17, with 6:38 to play in the first half. Siena Heights spent the remainder of the half maintaining a double-digit advantage as the team went into the locker room with a 42-30 lead.

A 10-0 run by the Saints in the first five minutes of the third quarter pushed the score to a 54-35 margin, and the home team never looked back as they kept the Golden Eagles at bay heading into the final period.

Powell made a three to ignite a 5-0 run the gave SHU a 73-47 lead with 8:14 left on the clock. The Saints grew their advantage to 28 at the 5:46 mark for the game's largest lead. Siena Heights outscored Cornerstone 44-22 in the paint. The Saints scored 19 points off Golden Eagle turnovers and dominated with 20 second-chance points.

Siena Heights will remain at home for a meeting with crosstown rival Adrian College this Tuesday night inside the SHU Fieldhouse. The game kicks off a basketball doubleheader with the Bulldogs starting at 6:00 p.m.
