Saints Suffer a 69-61 Setback to Trine

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's basketball team (1-1) suffered a 69-61 loss at home to Trine on Sunday. Peyton Banks (Jr. | Wadsworth, Ohio) led with 24 points in the losing effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The game began with a strong defensive effort for Siena Heights as they forced a shot-clock violation. The next three minutes and change were sloppy on both sides as the Saints had a turnover and missed two easy shots. The Thunder tallied two turnovers before making the game's first bucket at the 6:57 mark in the first. Sha'kyia Parker (So. | Grand Rapids, Mich.) responded with a layup for SHU that tied the game at two points. Trine used a 6-0 run to build an 11-4 lead with 3:54 remaining in the opening 10 minutes. Kelsey Wyman (Jr. | Blissfield, Mich.) hit a layup through a foul and completed the three-point play that sparked an 8-0 run that gave the Saints their first lead of the game (12-11). The Thunder would recapture the lead (16-14) before the close of the first quarter with a layup and a three-point jumper.

Trine started the second with a 9-0 run that extended the lead to 25-14 in the opening three minutes of the quarter. The Saints responded with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to five points with 6:58 left in the half. The Thunder tallied eight-consecutive points to obtain the largest lead in the game 36-21 with 2:18 remaining on the clock. Siena Heights ended the half with a 6-0 run to bring the scoring margin to single digits, but a made free throw in the final 1:30 would put Trine up by 10 at the intermission.

The Saints got off to a fast start in the third stanza with runs of 5-0 and 6-0 to take a 41-40 lead at the 3:36 mark of the quarter. The lead was short-lived as the Thunder used a 5-0 run to hold a four-point advantage. A three-point jumper by Parker brought the Saints within one possession of tying things up before two free throws by the visitor put things at 49-45 heading into the final 10 minutes. 

Parker got things going for SHU in the fourth with a three-pointer in the opening two minutes. Trine responded with a 10-0 run that increased the lead to 11 points (59-48) with 5:58 remaining in regulation. The deficit for SHU increased to 13 before the Saints began chipping away with layups and free throws until the score sat at 65-61 in favor of Trine with 33 seconds remaining. The Saints were forced to foul to preserve time and the Thunder made the shots to put the game away.

TOP SAINTS

• Banks was a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line on the way to her 24 points. She also tallied four steals and three rebounds on the day.

• Wyman recorded 11 points on 4-8 field-goal shooting. She made all three of her free-throw attempts while also dishing five assists and two rebounds.

• Parker contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and a steal.

Shelby Morrow (Jr. | Flushing, Mich.) had a team-high seven rebounds in the game. She was one basket away from a double-double.

• Kaylee Argyle - 19 points, Kelsy Taylor 13 points, 11 rebounds, Tara Bieniewicz 12 points.

• Sam Underhill 12 rebounds.
