Watson Becomes Women's Basketball's First Professional Athlete

Former Siena Heights women's basketball player April Watson has accomplished something that no other Siena Heights women's basketball player has done. Watson, the Detroit native, has signed a professional contract with TGN Spain in Tarragona, Spain.

Watson says about having the opportunity to play professionally, "I am excited about the opportunity to be playing overseas. I would like to thank my family, my teams and all of my supporters for hanging in there with me. It's been a long journey and this is something that I have dreamed of doing."

Last season, Watson was the women's basketball program's first, First Team All-American selection after averaging 19.4 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. In her two-year career at Siena Heights, Watson scored 1,073 points.

When asked about what she can contribute to her new team, Watson explains, "I am a really big factor to the team. I'm able to bring a lot of height, physicality and a big presence in the paint. We have very scrappy guards that can get to the basket as well. This season we have a chance to be at the top of the league."

Siena Heights women's basketball head coach Sue Syljebeck discusses, "This is a great opportunity for April that no one else from our program has done. Getting to play the sport she loves, at the professional level and be able to see the world while doing so is something special."

The season runs from October through May, where Watson will play her first contest on Saturday, Oct. 14.
