Calhoun Effort Helps #16 Women's Basketball Past Marygrove

DETROIT, Mich. -- Sierra Calhoun finished with 21 points and six rebounds to lead the 16th-ranked Siena Heights women's basketball team to a 57-50 victory over Marygrove in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.

Mackenzie Tomasik added 12 points and eight rebounds while Najee Brazzle contributed nine points off the bench for Siena Heights (2-0, 1-0).

The second half featured eight lead changes. Marygrove led, 39-33, with 11:06 remaining before the Saints forced ties at 41- and 43-all.

A 3-pointer by the Mustangs' Raeha Weaver put the hosts ahead, 46-43, with 3:56 left. From there, the Saints outscored Marygrove, 14-4, the rest of the way. SHU took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Calhoun with 3:10 on the clock.

In the first half, SHU and Marygrove (1-4, 0-1) traded runs before SHU took a 23-19 advantage into halftime.

Siena Heights opened with the game's first six points, but Marygrove came back with six of its own. Later in the first, the Mustangs put in 11 consecutive points before the Saints responded with 10 straight, including eight by Calhoun.

Tiffany Bradford was Marygrove's leading scorer with 14 points. Weaver added 12 while Theresa Dray and Micaiah King grabbed seven rebounds apiece.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. WHAC contest at Indiana Tech.
