Late Inning Heroics Lead Saints to Two Wins

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Siena Heights softball team earned two wins on their second day of the SpaceCoast Games week on Monday. The Saints beat Bethel (Ind.), 4-2, before taking a 6-5 victory against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).

The Saints will play again Tuesday against Fisher (Mass.) and Mount Marty (S.D.).

Siena Heights 4, Bethel 2

After the Saints saw themselves with zero hits heading into the fifth inning, a huge impactful at-bat by Emma Marshall who battled off five two strike pitches with foul balls led to the Saints' first hit.  A Bethel error on a sac bunt by Sydnee Hazlett led to pinch runner Avery Schellenberger scoring on a sac fly by Faith Breinager to score the games first run.  The Saints tacked on one more run in the fifth along with solo runs in the 6th and 7th before giving up two runs in the bottom of the 7th for the final score of 4-2.

Kat Moreau and Lee Clinton had the other hits for the Saints on the game with Breinager earning two RBI on two sac flies.  Marshall also notched an RBI with a bases loaded hit by pitch and Eva Curtis tallied the other Saints RBI on a ball that fell in left field but saw a runner forced out moving to 3rd base.

Shyann Truax went the distance in the circle, getting charged for one earned run on six hits. She had five strikeouts and one walk.

Siena Heights 6, Dakota Wesleyan 5

Dakota Wesleyan opened the scoring in the second inning before tacking on a single run in the fourth.  Going into the 6th, the Saints saw their tough luck with two hard hit balls that turned into double plays start to turn the other way.

A single by Curtis brought in Kennedy Keller to pinch run, a single by Ellie Thelen followed by an RBI single by Ally Frank cut the lead to one as they headed into the 7th inning.

In the top of the 7th, a single by Marshall once again started the ball rolling, Lauren Dioszegi put down a sacrifice bunt which saw a throwing error allowing pinch runner Lee Clinton to cross the plate with Dioszegi advancing all the way to third base.  Breinager followed that up with an RBI single to give the Saints their first lead of the game.  A squeeze bunt by Courtnee Chappetta plated another run before a bases loaded walk by Hazlett added some insurance.  Frank grounded out plating the final run of the inning.

The bottom of the 7th proved eventful with the game being brought to a 6-5 score with two outs and the bases loaded.  After a controversial play which loaded the bases, Riley Hoover coaxed a groundout right back to herself to end the game.

Breinager and Marshall each had two hits, with Breinager, Chappetta, and Hazlett each notching a single RBI and Frank knocking in two RBI.

Jordan Green started for the Saints earning the win.  She completed 6.2 innings allowing 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out two.  Hoover came in and got the games final out to earn the save.
