Game-One Comeback Sparks Softball To Sweep Over Cleary

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights softball team swept a WHAC doubleheader against Cleary, 11-10 and 11-0, at Christensen Memorial Softball Field on Saturday.

The Saints (12-25, 8-10) will play again on Sunday when they visit Northwestern Ohio for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

 

Game one: SHU 11, Cleary 10 (8 innings)

Alexis Hirst blased a pinch-hit RBI triple to cap the Saints' comeback from a seven-run deficit. Cleary had scored the first six runs and led by as many as 9-2.

Sydnee Hazlett scored the winning run and earned her first collegiate win with three shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Ally Frank had three hits while Kat Moreau and Courtnee Chappetta provided two-hit games for Siena Heights. Moreau scored twice while Chappetta tripled.

Ellie Thelen also tripled for the Saints. Faith Breinager collected a double and two RBI.

Trailing 6-0 in the third, the Saints began chipping away with a pair of runs. Chappetta had an RBI single and Sam Spicer had an RBI squeeze bunt.

Siena Heights used its five-run fourth inning to trim its deficit to 9-7. Breinager had an RBI double in the frame, Moreau and Eva Curtis hit RBI singles and Shyann Truax drew a bases-loaded, pinch-hit walk.

The visiting Cougars pushed their advantage to 10-7 with their final run in the fifth.

An RBI single by Curtis pulled the Saints within 10-8 in the fifth. Sacrifice flies by Lauren Dioszegi and Breinager tied the game in the sixth.

A leadoff hit by Hazlett set the stage for Hirst's game-ending, one-out three-bagger in the eighth.

 

Game two: SHU 11, Cleary 0 (5 innings)

Chappetta and Thelen had three hits apiece, including two doubles and three RBI each, as the Saints ended the contest via run rule.

Maddie Herrera added two hits, two runs and two RBI. She had a triple. Frank went 2-for-2 with a double. Breinager also doubled.

Truax was the winning pitcher, giving up three hits in five innings pitched. She had three strikeouts and one walk.

SHU jumped in front with a two-run first and never looked back. Chappetta had an RBI single in that frame.

The Saints plated four in the second, including two on a Herrera triple and one on a Chappetta double.

Dioszegi had an RBI single in the third and, during the Saints' four-run fourth, Chappetta ripped an RBI double and Thelen crunched a three-run double.
