Chappetta Caps Monster Day With Walkoff Single as Softball Splits With Cornerstone

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Courtnee Chappetta delivered a walkoff RBI single as the Siena Heights softball salvaged a split with WHAC opponent Cornerstone and earned its first conference win of the season on Monday at Christensen Memorial Softball Field. The visiting Golden Eagles won game one, 8-5, before SHU claimed game two, 12-11.

The Saints (5-22, 1-7) will turn around quickly for another WHAC doubleheader on Tuesday at Lawrence Tech, starting at 3:30 p.m.

 

Game one: Cornerstone 8, SHU 5

Chappetta began her strong day with a 2-for-2 game in the opener. She had a double, an RBI and a run. Eva Curtis and Lauren Dioszegi added two-hit games. Ellie Thelen tripled.

Shyann Truax started in the pitcher's circle, going 5 1/3 innings before Riley Hoover finished up the final 1 2/3.

SHU trailed 3-0 before pushing across its first two runs on RBI singles by Kat Moreau and Curtis in the third.

Chappetta and Alexis Hirst added sacrifice flies later in the contest and Lyndsey Pena also drove in a run.

 

Game two: SHU 12, Cornerstone 11

Chappetta stayed hot at the plate in the nightcap, batting 4-for-5 with a triple, double, six RBI and two runs.

Curtis and Faith Breinager went 3-for-4 with two RBI each. Breinager scored three runs.

Moreau and Thelen finished 2-for-4. Moreau and Maddie Herrera scored two runs apiece. Herrera also doubled.

Hoover was the winning pitcher as she was credited with only 1/3 innings pitched, but enough for the win. Aila Johnson pitched the first 6 2/3 and struck out five batters.

Siena Heights fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and answered with a six-run second. Breinager hit a two-run single and Chappetta provided a bases-loaded triple. Curtis added an RBI single to push the lead to 6-4.

The visiting Golden Eagles came back with the next five runs, getting four in the fifth and one in the sixth, to take a 9-6 advantage.

Chappetta had a two-run double and Curtis had another RBI single as the Saints evened the tally at 9-9 in the sixth.

Cornerstone went ahead for the final time in its half of the seventh, getting two runs to go up 11-9.

In SHU's half of the seventh, Herrera ripped an RBI double and Moreau planted a squeeze bunt to tie the game. A groundball through the middle of the infield by Chappetta plated Herrera with the winning run.
