Breinager Homers, Truax Fires Shutout as Softball Claims Split in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Siena Heights softball team snapped a five-game losing streak on the back end of a split during the Tucson Invitational Games on Wednesday.

The Saints lost to Park-Gilbert (Ariz.), 10-3, and then bounced back for a 4-0 victory over Concordia (Neb.).

SHU (3-8) will play again in Tucson on Thursday with games against Jamestown (N.D.) and York (Neb.).

Game one: Park-Gilbert 10, SHU 3

Faith Breinager batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Ellie Thelen tripled for the Saints. Maddie Herrera drove in two runs, both on sacrifice flies.

Leading 2-1 after four innings, Park-Gilbert broke the contest open with a 7-run fifth inning.

Siena Heights took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Herrera flyout. Her next sac fly came in the fifth, trimming a SHU deficit to 9-2. Both times, Breinager was the scorer from third base.

Ally Frank drove in Ellie Thelen with an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth for SHU's final run.

Shyann Truax was the losing pitcher. In 4 2/3 innings, she was charged with two earned runs on four hits while totaling four strikeouts and six walks.

Riley Hoover worked 1 1/3 frames of scoreless relief.

Game two: SHU 4, Concordia (Neb.) 0

Breinager had her first collegiate home run and Truax spun a five-hit shutout as the Saints finished with their most complete game on the Tucson trip.

Truax had five strikeouts and six walks for the complete game. Breinager finished with two RBI.

Also for the SHU offense, Eva Curtis batted 4-for-4 with a double while Truax and Kat Moreau provided two-hit games.

Breinager's homer was an inside-the-park job in the third. It came after Thelen put the Saints ahead 1-0 with an RBI single in the second.

Breinager hit an elusive fly ball down the right-field line, which dove under a diving fielder and to the fence. Breinager completed the 240-foot sprint with a slide, putting SHU on top 2-0.

Courtnee Chappetta added an RBI groundout in the fifth and Breinager plated a run via fielder's choice in the sixth.
