Softball Drops Pair on Day Three in the Desert

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Siena Heights softball team dropped a pair of games on its third day at the Tucson Invitational Games on Monday. The Saints fell in walkoff fashion to Jamestown (N.D.), 9-8, and then lost to Northwestern (Iowa), 12-0.

The Saints (2-7) will have an off day Tuesday before returning to action in Tucson on Wednesday with games against Park-Gilbert and Concordia (Neb.).

Game one: Jamestown 9, SHU 8

The day's opener came down to the wire before a Siena Heights error helped the Jimmies take the victory.

The Saints had trailed 8-5 before tying the game with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Courtnee Chappetta (double) and Lyndsey Pena had 2-for-4 games for SHU. Chappetta scored once and Pena collected two RBI.

Ally Frank added a triple for the Siena Heights offense.

An RBI single by Pena accounted for the Saints' only run as they fell behind 3-1.

A 4-run third pushed SHU into a 5-3 lead. Chappetta, Pena and Sam Spicer had run-scoring singles in the frame.

Jamestown retook the lead with three runs in the third and then stretched it to 8-5 in the fifth.

Chappetta pulled the Saints one run closer with an RBI double in the sixth. In the seventh, Frank delivered a two-out RBI triple and scored on an RBI single by Ellie Thelen to tie the game.

Siena Heights did not record an out in the seventh. After a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt led to a Saint error and allowed Jamestown's Maddie Spaeth to score from first base.

Shyann Truax started in the pitcher's circle, and ended there, but did not pitch the complete game. She was the pitcher of record, however, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits while recording five strikeouts and one walk.

Aila Johnson worked a scoreless sixth inning for the Saints, striking out one batter.

Game two: Northwestern 12, SHU 0

A tough Northwestern squad ripped 15 hits and limited the SHU offense to only four.

The game was tight through four innings as the Red Raiders led 1-0 before plating four runs in the fifth and seven in the seventh.

Truax, Faith Breinager, Kat Moreau and Alexis Hirst had hits for the Saints.

Johnson was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs on eight hits.
