Softball Drops Two on Opening Day of Tucson Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Siena Heights softball team opened its spring trip with a pair of losses at the Tucson Invitational Games.

The Saints (1-4) fell to Ottawa (Ariz.), 5-0, and then Arizona Christian, 4-2.

SHU will return to action Sunday with games against Saint Mary (Neb.) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).

 

Game one: Ottawa 5, SHU 0

Courtnee Chappetta had two hits, including a double to lead the Siena Heights offense.

Shyann Truax and Riley Hoover worked in the circle for SHU. Truax allowed four runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. Hoover pitched 2 2/3 frames without allowing an earned run.

Ottawa pitcher Alexandra McCutcheon fired a five-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters.

Ottawa scored four times in the fourth and added another run in the fifth.

 

Game two: Arizona Christian 4, SHU 2

Aila Johnson gutted out a complete game in the losing effort, allowing two earned runs on four hits.

Chappetta homered and Kat Moreau hit a sacrifice fly for SHU's two runs.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead on Chappetta's dinger in the first.

Both teams scored in the third. The Firestorm tied the contest and then SHU retook the lead when Moreau plated Kennedy Keller with her out.

Arizona Christian went ahead with two runs in the fourth and then tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
