Softball Sweeps Cleary on the Road

HOWELL, Mich. – The Siena Heights softball team swept Cleary on the road in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Saints (20-11, 9-5 WHAC) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to clinch a 7-4 victory before completing the sweep with a 3-0 shutout-win in game two.

Game One: Siena Heights def. Cleary, 7-4

Courtnee Chappetta (2-for-4) and Kelsey Uhl (2-for-3) led the Saints with two hits, two RBIs, and one run in game one. Sam Spicer (2-for-3) tallied two hits and brought a runner home in the win. Uhl (W, 6-6) earned the win in the circle with seven complete innings. Uhl gave up 11 hits while only allowing two earned runs in the victory.

Chappetta doubled to center field to score Lily Guerra in the top half of the first to put SHU up 1-0. Uhl singled to left-center on the next play to bring Chappetta home and double up the lead for Siena Heights.

The Cougars rallied in the second inning with an RBI-double to left field that brought a runner home before an error allowed a second run to cross the plate and tie things at two.

A sacrifice fly gave Cleary a 3-2 lead in the third. Another Saint error allowed the fourth run as the Cougars held a 4-2 advantage after three innings of play.

Uhl busted a home run to center field that cut the deficit to 4-3. Spicer's single to center scored Lauren Dioszegi in the sixth inning to tie things 4-4.

SHU took the final lead in the top half of the seventh with three runs. The first came from Sam Hill, who scored off an RBI single to center from Maddie Herrera. Then, Chappetta singled to left to bring Guerra home before Abby Fisher singled to left field to score Herrera and put the Saints ahead for good with a 7-4 score.

Game Two: Siena def. Cleary, 3-0

Hill led the way in game two with three hits on four at-bats. She scored a run while also bringing one home in the winning effort. Guerra (2-for-4) and Uhl (2-for-3) had two hits. Guerra also led SHU with two RBIs. Jordan Green (W, 10-3) pitched seven-shutout innings to earn her 10th win. Green sat down six hitters in the contest.

The Saints had three-up-three-down innings defensively the first time through the Cougar order. Hill singled to left field to score Uhl in the top half of the second to take the 1-0 advantage. Guerra hit an RBI single to left field that brought Hill and Kat Moreau home for the final 3-0 deficit in the top of the fifth. SHU's defense stymied Cleary as the visitors faced more than three batters in only two innings of game two.

The Saints remain on the road for a WHAC doubleheader against #20 Madonna on Saturday, April 23. The first game is slated to begin at noon EST.
