Softball Takes Two Versus Rochester

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Siena Heights softball team won both games in the doubleheader against Rochester on Thursday afternoon. The Saints (17-10, 6-4 WHAC) took game one 5-4 in an extra-inning before a 7-2 completed the sweep in game two.

Game One: Siena Heights def. Rochester, 5-4 – 8 innings

Sam Hill (3-for-4) and Courtnee Chappetta (3-for-5) led SHU in game one with three hits. Hill scored a run while Chappetta earned an RBI in the contest. Maddie Herrera (2-for-5), Abby Fisher (2-for-4), and Julia Hogston (2-for-4) recorded two hits in the winning effort. Fisher tallied a run and an RBI while Hogston brought one runner home. Kelsey Uhl earned the win with eight innings of work, where she allowed six hits and struck out six Warriors.

Rochester scored first with a ground ball that scored a run for the 1-0 edge. Lily Guerra tied things up in the bottom half of the first after a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Hill to tag up and make it home.

An errant throw on a stolen-base attempt allowed two Warrior baserunners to score in the top of the third. An RBI single scored another as Rochester regained the lead, 4-1.

Fisher cut the deficit to two with an RBI double that scored Lauren Dioszegi. Hogston added an RBI single three plays later to score Fisher as SHU was just one run away from knotting things up for the second time.

The tie came in the bottom of the seventh on a single from Alexis Hirst, where a throw to third to get Uhl out brought Kennedy Keller home to force extra innings.

After a three-up-three-down top half, Hill singled to get on base with one out but was caught stealing for the second out. Guerra then singled and was moved to second off a single from Herrera. Chappetta stepped up with a chance for a walk-off and didn't miss as she singled to score Guerra and grab the win for SHU.

Game Two: Siena Heights def. Rochester, 7-2

Hill had the hot bat in game two as she finished 3-for-4 from the plate with a home run, two runs, and an RBI. Chappetta completed back-to-back multiple-hit showings with two hits during her four plate appearances. Sam Spicer brought in two runners. Jordan Green got the "W" in the circle as she pitched a complete game where she surrendered six hits, two earned runs, and struck out three.

Hill led off the game with a home run to put Siena Heights up 1-0 early. A triple in the top of the second tied the score at one run. Kat Moreau responded with a sacrifice RBI that scored Hogston for the 2-1 lead in the second.

The score stagnated until the bottom half of the fifth when the Saints scored five runs. The first run was given by a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to score Moreau. Uhl then brought Hill home for a 4-1 lead. Hogston singled to score Guerra before Spicer brought Hogston and Uhl home with a single on the next play to put the score at 7-1, SHU.

Rochester scored an additional run in the sixth inning, but the Saints would surrender no more runs to finish the game with the win.
