Softball Suffers Setback at Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Siena Heights softball team lost both games in a doubleheader against 18th-ranked Aquinas on Sunday afternoon. The Saints (12-9, 1-3 WHAC) were defeated 10-2 in five innings in game one before a 6-3 loss in game two ended the weekend.

Game One: Aquinas def. Siena Heights, 10-2 – 5 Innings

In game one, Sam Hill (2-for-3) recorded both hits for the Saints. Hill crossed the plate twice in the game and also registered an RBI. Kelsey Uhl (L, 3-5) pitched three innings to start the day for SHU. She struck out five batters while allowing seven hits and four earned runs.

Uhl put Siena Heights ahead in the first inning with a bases-loaded walk that brought Hill home for the 1-0 lead. Aquinas knotted things up with a single through the left side that scored a run in the bottom half of the opening inning.

Hill hit an inside-the-park home run in the top half of the second inning to give SHU the 2-1 lead. However, the home team responded with a two-run home run and an RBI double that put Aquinas up 4-2.

The score stayed there until the bottom of the fifth when Aquinas scored five runs to end the game with a 10-2 result.

Game Two: Aquinas def. Siena Heights, 6-3 – 7 Innings

Uhl was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Siena Heights batters in game two. Hill (2-for-4) and Courtnee Chappetta (2-for-4) totaled two hits. Chappetta had two RBIs and a run scored, Hill scored a run, and Uhl brought in a run. Jordan Green (L, 5-4) started in the circle for SHU. She pitched 5.0 innings and struck out seven Aquinas bats, surrendering seven hits and only three earned runs.

In the first two innings, the home team put a run on the board to capture a 2-0 lead. Kat Moreau (1-for-3) singled to lead off the third and advanced to second on a bunt from Hill that put runners on first and second base. Hill and Moreau advanced to second and third on a groundout before Chappetta belted a double to center field that scored them both to tie the score at two runs. Uhl then singled to right-center, and Chappetta scored to give the Saints a 3-2 advantage.

The slim lead was maintained until the bottom of the fourth inning when a SHU error allowed two runs to score, and Aquinas flipped the score to 4-3 in the home team's favor. The hosts scored two additional runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend things to 6-3. Hogston hit a single up the middle with one out to get on base, but back-to-back flyouts ended the rally for Siena Heights.
