Softball Takes Game One in Extra Innings in Split with Pioneers

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Siena Heights softball team took a 5-4 decision in game one of a doubleheader against Point Park with a walk-off sacrifice fly that sent the winning run across the plate. Game two was a sloppy affair, with the final score being 4-2 in favor of the visitors.

Game One: Siena Heights def. Point Park, 5-4 – 8 Innings

Courtnee Chappetta had the hot bat in game one as she was 3-for-4 from the plate while being responsible for all five runs scored by the team with her three RBIs and two runs in game one. Sam Hill (1-for-3), Julia Hogston (1-for-3), and Maddie Herrera (1-for-4) each finished the first seven innings with a hit. Hogston scored two runs while Herrera made it around the base paths once. Shyann Truax got the start in the circle and pitched four innings. Truax sat down five batters before being relieved by Kelsey Uhl (W, 2-2) in the fifth.

The Pioneers hopped to a 2-0 lead after a passed ball and an RBI single brought runners home in the opening at-bats. Chappetta cut the deficit in half with a solo home run over the left-field fence in the second to put SHU on the board, 2-1. The Holland, Ohio native came up big again in the third with a double to left-center that brought Hogston home, and just like that, the score was tied at two runs apiece.

Another passed ball brought Point Park a second lead, 3-2, before a solo homer to right field gave the Pioneers an insurance tally on the next play. Unphased by the two outs on the board, Herrera doubled to left-center to score Hogston and Chappetta singled to bring Herrera home to knot things up at four.

The score remained tied through seven as the game was pushed into extra innings. The Saints avoided giving up a score despite a runner on second via the international tiebreaker. Uhl hit a sacrifice bunt to move Chappetta to third, and Abby Fisher brought her home with a sacrifice fly to center field to give SHU the 5-4 win.

Game Two: Point Park def. Siena Heights, 4-2 – 7 Innings

Uhl led the way offensively for Siena Heights in game two as she was two for three at the plate. Six other Saints recorded a hit in the game. Hill (1-for-4) scored both runs for Siena Heights. Hogston and Herrera each finished with an RBI. Jordan Green (L, 4-2) made the start for SHU. She struck out six Pioneer hitters while surrendering five hits. Uhl pitched 3.0 innings in relief, striking out two hitters.

Herrera singled to score Hill in the bottom of the first inning as the Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead early. A triple in the top half of the third scored a Point Park runner, and the score was tied at one. A single brought a second runner home before a double scored another, and the score was 3-1 going into the fourth.

Point Park extended the advantage to 4-1 in the fourth inning with a double to left-center. Hogston cut the margin to two runs in the bottom half of that inning with an RBI single to right-center that brought Hill home, but SHU failed to score any more runs before the seventh inning came to a close.
