Saints Split Home Opener with Trolls

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Siena Heights softball team split with the Trinity Christian Trolls in the team's home-opening doubleheaders on Thursday afternoon. The Saints (7-4) won the first game 5-1 before dropping game two in eight innings by a score of 5-2.

Game One: Siena Heights def. Trinity Christian, 5-1

Nine different SHU batters recorded a hit in the 5-1 win. Abby Fisher (1-for-1) led offensively with two RBIs in the contest. Lily Guerra (1-for-3), Lyndsey Pena (1-for-3), and Kat Moreau (1-for-3) brought a runner home. Courtnee Chappetta (1-for-3) scored two runs while Alexis Hirst, Guerra, and Fisher made it home safely. Jordan Green (W, 4-1) pitched her fourth complete game to earn the win inside the circle. The Sophomore gave up three hits, and one earned run while striking out three Trolls.

Trinity Christian got on the scoreboard first when a runner on third advanced on a throw to second during a stolen base attempt putting the score at 1-0 in the top of the 3rd-inning. Chappetta singled up the middle to lead off the bottom half of the 4th-inning before stealing second base. Guerra tallied an RBI with a ground out to second that brought Chappetta home, and SHU tied the score at one.

The Saints took control of the game in the 6th-inning, starting with a two-RBI single for Fisher that gave Siena Heights its first lead of the contest, 3-1. Pena singled to left-center to score Guerra, and the advantage was increased to 4-1. The final run came off a single from Moreau that scored Fisher as the Saints recorded the three outs needed in the top half of the seventh to secure the win in game one.

Game Two: Trinity Christian def. Siena Heights, 5-2 – 8 Innings

Moreau led offensively with two hits on three at-bats while scoring both runs for SHU in the game. Maddie Herrera (1-for-4) received the two RBIs for the game. Five other Siena Heights softball players recorded a hit in the losing effort. Kelsey Uhl (L, 1-2) pitched all eight innings for SHU in the second game. She allowed nine hits, four earned runs and struck out seven Trolls in the game.

The game remained scoreless for the opening four innings of play. Trinity Christian scored on an RBI-single to right field to a 1-0 lead. An errant throw by the Saints allowed the runner on first to advance to second while another scored to double the advantage. Herrera grounded out but brought Moreau home in the bottom half of the 5th-inning to cut the deficit, 2-1.

A single to left-center by Herrera helped Moreau cross the plate again, and the Saints knotted things up in the bottom half of the seventh to force extra innings.

The Trolls hit a single to center field to put a runner on base with one out in the eighth inning. A double on the next play put runners in scoring position before a walk loaded the bases with only one out. Trinity Christian then used a double to right-center to score two runners and take a 4-2 lead. A groundout to second scored another, and the lead was 5-2 going into the bottom half. However, the Saints rally fell short as the Troll defense forced two groundouts and a pop-out to seal the victory.
