Saints Stumble in Game Three of Spring Break Trip

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Siena Heights softball team fell 10-0 to Saint Xavier in five innings in the only contest played on day two of the spring break games in Kissimmee, Florida. The Saints (2-1) were scheduled to meet Carlow, but that game was canceled.

Maddie Herrera (1-for-2) and Sam Spicer (1-for-2) were the only Saint bats to record hits in the contest. Kelsey Uhl (L, 1-1) made the start in the circle for SHU. She pitched two innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and a home run. Jordan Green pitched an inning of relief and surrendered five runs and five hits while also sitting two batters. Shyann Truax pitched two innings where she struck out a batter and gave up a hit.

The Cougars broke the tie in the 1st-inning with a two-out RBI double for the early lead. A baserunner reached base on an infield error before another SXU batter was hit by a pitch, and there were runners on first and second. A two-run single pushed the advantage to 3-0, heading into the bottom half of the second. Sam Spicer singled with two outs to get on the base path in the bottom of the 2nd-inning. Courtnee Chappetta reached base on an infield error that put Spicer in scoring position, but the Saints failed to capitalize on the scoring opportunity.

A home run in the top of the 3rd-inning extended the lead to 4-0. An error and a single put runners on the first two bases and prompted a change at pitcher for SHU as Jordan Green entered the circle. She forced a pop fly before striking out two batters to escape the inning with no more runs put on the board.

Saint Xavier tallied five runs in the fourth after a three-up-three-down bottom half of inning three, and the lead was 9-0 as the game moved into the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly put the 10th, and final, run on the board for SXU in the fifth. The Saints needed to make something happen offensively to avoid the run-rule, but a fly out to center field, a ground out to short, and a strikeout ended the game after five innings.
