Saints Split at Spring Arbor

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Siena Heights softball team split with Spring Arbor on the road on Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars won the first game 2-1 while the Saints nabbed a 10-6 victory in game two. Lily Guerra led the Saints with five RBIs on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Spring Arbor def. Siena Heights, 2-1

Sam Hill singled to center field to lead off the game on base. Lily Guerra moved her over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Kelsey Uhl then hit a single to right to put Hill on third for runners on the corners. Haley Rose brought Hill home with a single to left field to give the Saints the 1-0 lead. Spring Arbor knotted things up in the bottom half of the 1st-inning when a runner crossed the plate on a ground out with runners on the corners.

A Siena Heights error allowed the Cougars to score and take a 2-1 lead. The Saints tallied 14 hits in the game but couldn't produce runs. SHU had multiple opportunities to score runs, but the Spring Arbor defense got out of some tough spots including a double play with bases loaded to end the top of the 4th-inning without allowing a run to score.

Game 2: Saints def. Spring Arbor, 10-6

A two-run home run by the Cougars in the bottom of the 1st-inning to jump ahead 2-0. The Saints would battle back in the 3rd-inning when a wild throw allowed Julia Hogston to score and the Saints cut the lead to 2-1. Another wild throw scored Guerra in the 5th-inning to tie the score at two runs each. The 4th-inning was a big one for the Saints as they tallied four runs on four hits to take a 6-2 advantage. The lead would increase to 8-2 in the fifth when Guerra singled to center field and brought Janelle Krueger and Hogston home. Spring Arbor scored one run in the fifth and three in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-6 but, SHU scored two insurance runs in the top half of the final inning before closing out game two with the win.

TOP SAINTS

Hitting

• Hill was 3-4 in the first game to lead the Saints. She also scored the games-only run in the 2-1 loss.

Maddie Herrera also finished game one 3-4 at the plate.

Julia Hogston and Rose were both 2-3 in the opening game.

• Guerra was an impressive 4-5 in game two with five RBIs to lead the Saints to the win.

• Spicer finished the second game with two hits (2-4) and an RBI.

Pitching

• Uhl pitched a complete game for Siena Heights in game one. She allowed seven hits and struck out four batters in the losing effort. Uhl pitched 1.2 innings of relief in game two to help split the doubleheader.

Jordan Green got the start in the circle for game two and pitched 5.1 innings. She allowed six hits, four runs, and struck out three batters on her way to the win.

THE OPPOSITION

Hitting

• Jessie Panchaud led the Cougars with two hits (2-3) in game one. She also scored one run.

• Hannah Laurin was 2-2 with two RBIs to lead game two.

• Chloe Gignac also recorded two hits in the second game.

Pitching

• Kelsey Sturgeon pitched four innings and allowed 10 hits in the win.

• Hannah Laurin pitched 3.2 innings in game two and struck out three batters.

• Marisa Morgan pitched 3.0 innings and gave up four runs.
