Five-Goal First Quarter Proves to be the Difference in 12-9 Win Over RV Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Siena Heights men's lacrosse team defeated Madonna 12-9 on the road Saturday afternoon. The Saints (7-4, 6-1 WHAC) outscored the Crusaders 5-2 in the opening quarter, which proved to be the difference in the contest.

Eric Csizmadia led with five points in the win with his four goals and one assist. Jake Gallaher scored four times while Devin Plemmons completed a hat trick and dished an assist. Fernando Robison won 17 of his 25 faceoffs and led the Saints with 13 ground balls. Vinnie Jean (W, 8-4) made ten saves to earn the win between the pipes for SHU. Garnet Potter had a game-high three assists on the afternoon.

Csizmadia scored first to give the Saints the 1-0 lead with 9:45 left in the first quarter. Madonna knotted things up at the 8:53 mark before Plemmons scored his first goal to retake the lead for SHU, 2-1. Csizmadia added a second score to extend the lead to 3-1 with 5:44 on the clock. Another goal by the home team cut the deficit by one, but Gallaher scored back-to-back goals in the final two minutes to push the advantage to three scores.

Gallaher completed his hat trick with a goal to start the second quarter. Madonna then scored twice to come within two scores of catching SHU. Plemmons scored his second goal with 38 ticks left in the first half as the Saints entered halftime with a 7-4 lead.

Potter and Csizmadia scored in the first five minutes of the second half as the lead grew to five. Two goals from the Crusaders brought the margin back to three goals as the Saints led 9-6 heading into the final period.

The teams traded scores for the fourth quarter as Madonna could never get closer than a three-goal deficit. Csizmadia scored first in the period. Plemmons and Gallaher were the other two goals for SHU as the Saints closed out the game with the victory.

UP NEXT

Siena Heights will remain on the road for a WHAC contest against fifth-ranked Aquinas this Wednesday, April 20. The opening faceoff for that game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
