Saints Outpaced by Dutchmen

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's lacrosse team surrendered three goals in the fourth quarter to NCAA Division III Hope in a 10-8 defeat on the road on Monday evening. The Saints (1-3) held an 8-7 advantage in the opening minute of the final period, but three straight scores by the Dutchmen proved to be the difference in the tightly fought contest.

Jake Gallaher led the way with a hat trick in the game. The current conference offensive player of the week totaled four points in the contest with an assist to his stat line. Gallaher also scooped up five ground balls and had a caused turnover. Logan Hudnut scored twice while also having a groundball. Eric Csizmadia, Fernando Robison, and Garnet Potter tallied a goal in the losing effort. Vinnie Jean (L, 1-3) made 21 saves in net to keep the Saints in the game.

Gallaher put the Saints on the board first with a man-up goal at 13:06 of the first quarter. Gallaher scored off an assist from Ryan Moore, and SHU was ahead 1-0. However, three-straight goals from Hope flipped the advantage to the Flying Dutchmen with just under half the first quarter remaining. Robison scored the final goal of the opening 15 minutes when he tallied an unassisted score that cut the Hope lead in half, 3-2.

In the first five seconds of the second quarter, Hudnut scored off an assist from Robison to tie the score at three apiece. Potter then tallied an unassisted strike at 12:44, and Siena Heights was back on top, 4-3. Another goal by the Dutchman tied things at four, but Gallaher scored back-to-back goals to give SHU a 6-4 lead with 6:37 left in the first half. Csizmadia increased the lead with a goal from Gallaher in the final two minutes of the second as SHU held a 7-4 lead. One last goal of the half by Hope cut the advantage to 7-5 as the teams entered the locker room at the half.

The home team scored the only two goals of the third period, which tied the score at seven as the teams entered the last quarter of regulation. Hudnut tallied his second goal in the fourth to give the Saints their final lead, 8-7, with 14:26 left on the clock. Hope held SHU scoreless the remainder of the game while tallying three more goals for the 10-8 decision.
