Second-Half Surge Pushes Saints Past Undefeated Cardinals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's lacrosse team outscored Concordia (Mich.) 5-1 and 6-2 in the final two quarters to pull away in a 17-8 win to give the Cardinals their first loss of the season. Garnet Potter dominated offensively with five goals on eight shots in the winning effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Concordia scored first in the opening three minutes of the game to take the 1-0 lead. Eric Csizmadia scored the first of his two goals with 8:37 left in the first quarter to tie the game at one goal each. The Cardinals retook the lead 2-1 with a goal at the 7:56 mark. Potter responded with back-to-back goals to put the Saints up 3-2 going into the second quarter. 

The score was tied at three and at four before Alec Emerson and Ryan Moore scored goals to lead 6-4 with 3:29 left in the half. The Cardinals cut the deficit to one, 6-5, as the teams entered the half. 

Potter scored the first goal in the second half to complete a hat trick and give the Saints a 7-5 advantage. Devin Plemmons adds an insurance goal before Potter scored his fourth to extend the lead to 9-5. A goal by CUAA put things at 9-6 before Plemmons and Moore scored to end the third quarter with an 11-6 lead, Siena Heights.

Five-straight goals from the Saints to start the fourth quarter put the score at 16-6 with 10:39 left in regulation. The Cardinals scored twice before Moore finished the scoring with 2:08 left in the game.

TOP SAINTS

• Potter added four ground balls to his totals.

• Emerson scored three goals and two assists for five points. He also tallied five ground balls in the contest. 

• Plemmons tallied a hat trick and also had an assist.

Jeff Putz recorded a SHU record 14 ground balls to lead all players in the game.

THE OPPOSITION

• Devin Wolever led the Cardinals with four points with two goals and two assists.

• Evan Stuart scored twice.

• Brendan Pfeiffer had a team-high seven ground balls.
