Saints Upset 5th Ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) on the Road to Start the 2021 Season

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The Siena Heights men's lacrosse team pulled away from the sixth-ranked Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday night. Eric Csizmadia led the Saints with a hat trick and two assists in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Csizmadia responded just over a minute later with his first goal of the game. He scored off an assist from Devin Plemmons. Cumberlands scored the final goal of the first to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.

Plemmons scored a goal of his own that sparked four-straight goals from the Saints as they pulled ahead 5-2 with just 2:45 remaining in the first half. The Patriots tallied one score to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Garnet Potter scored a goal with seven seconds left to give SHU the 6-3 lead as the teams entered the locker room at the half.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle as Mitch Albrant scored the only goal of the period with 10:06 on the clock that gave Siena a 7-3 lead.

The Saints held onto the advantage throughout the final quarter as they outscored the host 4-2 to seal the victory.

Siena Heights got great play from Vinnie Jean in goal as he stopped 14 of the 19 shots he faced. The Patriots outshot the Saints 41-29 but failed to make many of those shots count. 

TOP SAINTS

• Csizmadia scored his three goals on 11 shots, five of which were on goal.

• Potter scored a hat trick and also had an assist. He also had three ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Jake Gallaher scored once and led the Saints in ground balls with five and caused turnovers with three.

THE OPPOSITION

• Thomas Fogarty led the Patriots with two goals.

• Jake Morgan led defensively with nine ground balls and five caused turnovers.

UP NEXT

The Saints return home to host Grand Valley State next Saturday, March 13. The game will be the home opener for Siena Heights and is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
