Men's Basketball Unable to Contain #5 Cornerstone

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's basketball team fell to fifth-ranked Cornerstone, 87-72, in a WHAC contest, on Tuesday.

Ben Lanning opened the game with a dunk, assisted by Cory Cox, and the Golden Eagles held on to the lead for the remainder of the game.

"Thirteen points is a deep hole to dig yourself out of, it's hard to come back from," says Coach Joe Pechota talking about the deficit at the half.

George Goodman and Josh Winowiecki both finished in double-digits for the Saints (5-9, 2-6). Goodman had 18 points, three assists and three rebounds while Winowiecki finished with 13 points.

Four Golden Eagles (11-2, 6-1) finished in double-digits. Lanning led Cornerstone with 24 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Kyle Steigenga had 23 points and four rebounds while Michael McLaughlin and Sam Vander Sluis finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

As a team, the Saints shot 25-52 (48.1 percent) from the field, 5-14 (35.7 percent) from three-point land and 17-20 (85.0 percent) from the line. The Golden Eagles finished 31-56 (55.4 percent) from the field, 4-14 (28.6 percent) behind the arch and 21-31 (67.7 percent) from the charity stripe.

SHU will head to Miami Gardens, Fla. for the non-conference Athlete's Meal Classic where they will face Florida Memorial on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 6 p.m. On Dec. 30, the Saints will face Saint Thomas (Fla.) at 8:30 p.m.
