Leighton's Big Night Not Enough as Men's Hoops Falls to MU

LIVONIA, Mich. -- Tyler Leighton finished with 25 points and nine rebounds, but the Siena Heights men's basketball team fell to Madonna, 76-65, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday.

George Goodman added 13 points and four rebounds while Jerrell Martin contributed nine rebounds for the Saints (9-16, 5-12).

SHU battled back from a 36-26 halftime deficit -- much thanks to a 12-0 run -- to pull even at 38-all. Leighton had six points during that charge.

Madonna (11-14, 7-10) then answered with five consecutive points and eventually pushed its lead back to nine points.

Later in the second, Goodman scored seven points in three possessions, helping the Saints pull their deficit back to 55-51. An eight-point run by the Crusaders followed as MU pushed the gap to 63-51 and helpd off SHU the rest of the way.

Siena Heights finished 25 of 61 from the field (41.0 percent), 5 of 12 from three-point land (41.7 percent) and 10 of 10 from the free-throw line.

Tyler Stewart had 13 points for Madonna while Donald Owens, Jeff Schmitz and Shaun Duncan put in 12, 11 and 10, respectively. Owens also had eight rebounds and Duncan made seven assists. Chris Dierker hauled down 10 rebounds.

The Saints will return to action on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. WHAC matchup with Marygrove.
