Goodman Lifts Men's Basketball to Win at UMD

DEARBORN, Mich. -- George Goodman's jump shot in the waning moments lifted the Siena Heights men's basketball team to a 66-65 victory over Michigan-Dearborn in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

Goodman scored the game-winner with two seconds remaining and -- after a Dearborn timeout -- the host Wolverines were unable to make an game-winning attempt of their own before time expired.

Christian Covile was SHU's leading scorer, finishing with 14 points, while Goodman and Eric Cogan put in 12 points apiece. Goodman also had six assists and three steals.

After the opening tip, Siena Heights grabbed a 14-4 lead and led by as many as 13 in the first half before taking a 43-38 advantage into intermission.

The Saints (9-15, 5-11) led until UMD knotted the contest at 53-all with 7:19 left in the contest. From that point, the teams traded the lead 10 times.

Goodman broke a 60-60 tie with two free throws at the 2:29 mark before Dearborn's Gage Throgmorton buried a three-pointer to put the hosts up, 63-62, with 1:03 left.

Covile made a pair of freebies with 32 seconds left, but once again, UMD answered -- this time on a jumpier by Jamiel Strickland with 19 seconds to go. This set the stage for Goodman's winner.

The Wolverines (8-16, 4-12) held a sizeable 44-25 advantage in rebounds, but SHU's efforts to protect the basketball resulted in only five turnovers to Dearborn's 14.

Strickland was UMD's leading scorer, finishing with 22 points. Throgmorton added 11 points, Jason Penn grabbed 10 rebounds, and Brandon Cole dished five assists.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. WHAC contest against Madonna.
