Men's Basketball Falls on Late Concordia Basket

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's basketball team dropped a 73-71 contest to Concordia on Saturday in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action at the SHU Fieldhouse. The Cardinals won the game on a basket with five seconds left.

Christian Covile led the Saints (6-6, 3-3) with a double-double consisting of 25 points and 10 rebounds. He also had four assists while Jerrell Martin contributed 12 points and five rebounds.

After trailing for much of the second half, Siena Heights took the lead on three occasions, but failed to hold off Concordia (6-4, 5-1).

The Saints took a 36-32 lead into halftime, but an 18-3 second-half run by Concordia put the Cardinals in command. The visitors held a 54-41 advantage.

Siena Heights then responded with a 19-6 stretch of its own, including six points from Nick Randle, whose layup tied the contest at 60-60.

The Saints gained the lead with a six-point run, getting four points from Covile and a go-ahead layup by Stone Beckwith, to take a 66-64 lead with 4:09 on the clock.

The teams traded baskets, forging a 68-68 knot, before a Covile free throw gave the Saints their final lead at 69-68.

Concordia then took the lead on a layup by Connor Phee, who was fouled in the process.

Trailing 71-69, the Saints converted a Covile layup with 15 seconds left, but ultimately set the stage for Josh Fugate's jumper in the paint, which put the Cardinals ahead for good.

Siena Heights had one final possession, but was unable to get a shot off.

Andrew Patrick had 17 points and nine assists for CUAA while Fugate and Phee chipped in with 13 points apiece. Joe Remstad hauled down 16 rebounds.

The Saints will play their next game on Saturday, Dec. 13, when they visit Northwestern Ohio for a 3 p.m. WHAC tip-off.
