Football Takes Down #12 Concordia

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Siena Heights pulled a 24-21 upset of 12th-ranked Concordia in Mid-States Football Association Mideast League action on Saturday. The victory is SHU's first over the Cardinals since 2014.

After falling behind 7-0 on Concordia's first offensive play, the Saints (4-3, 2-2) rattled off 21 consecutive points. SHU never trailed after that.

Defensive back Shamar Askin had a 40-yard interception return to paydirt, which gave SHU a 14-7 lead, putting the Saints ahead for good. 

Running back Ethan LoPresto led the SHU offense with 29 carries for 111 yards and one touchdown while quarterback Elijah Taylor had a TD run. Bobby Opalewski was the leading receiver with five grabs for 88 yards.

Askin was one of three Saints with an interception. Fellow DB Isaiah Pizzo and linebacker Clarke Hamilton also had picks.

Hamilton and Cayden Hankins made six tackles each. Hamilton had 2 1/2 for-loss while Hankins had one.

Defensive lineman Nico Fernandez added 2 1/2 tackles-for-loss, including 1 1/2 sacks.

Kicker David Medvedik hit a key 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter which pushed SHU's lead to 24-14 before CUAA's final score.

The Saints will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 28, with a noon MSFA Mideast kickoff at O'Laughlin Stadium against Lawrence Tech.
