Izayah Newsom Selected First Team CoSIDA Academic All-America

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Siena Heights senior defensive lineman Izayah Newsom (South Bend, Ind. / Mishawaka Marian) was selected to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America™ NAIA Football Team as announced by CoSIDA.

Newsom played in eight games this season for the Saints. He totaled 37 tackles (5th-most on the team) and two sacks. Eight of his tackles were for also for loss.

Izayah adds this accomplishment to his career highlights that also include being named a two-time Daktronics NAIA Football Scholar-Athlete, three-time Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) all-academic team selection, and one of three Saint football players on the 2018 Google Cloud All-District First Team. Newsom also finished his career tied for fifth all-time in sacks with 6.5.

"Izayah has had a tremendous career here at Siena Heights University," said Head Coach Matt Kohn. "He has been a great representative for our program and is deserving of receiving this award.

Newsom majors in business and has the fifth-highest GPA on the Academic All-America team.

The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® College Division teams consist of the 27 best NAIA student-athletes on the field and in the classroom from all across the country. The team consisted of one quarterback, two running backs, two receivers, two tight ends, five offensive linemen, one kicker, one special team's player, four defensive linemen, three linebackers, four defensive backs, and two punters.

Newsom is one of two student-athletes in the state of Michigan and one of three representing the MSFA Mid-East League.
