Football 2016 Season Wrap-Up

 

Head coach Matt Kohn finished his first season as the Siena Heights football interim head coach with a 5-5 record going 2-4 in conference play before recently being named the full-time head coach.

Offensively, the Saints averaged 205.5 passing yards per game and 94.8 rushing yards per game to finish the season with an average of 300.0 yards per game. Defensively, the Saints tallied 16 interceptions, 10 fumble recoveries, two defensive touchdowns, 18 sacks and 665 tackles. Special teams for SHU finished with an average of 25.8 kick return yards and 5.6 punt return yards. SHU also made eight field goals, 22 PAT's and finished with 34.5 average punt yards.

Nate Yeloushan was named the Team's Most Valuable Player. Yeloushan started all seven games that he appeared in before suffering a season-ending injury. However, Yeloushan finished the season with 56 total tackles, and lead the team with an average of eight tackles per game. Yeloushan also tallied a fumble recovery, two interceptions, and four pass break-ups for SHU.

Quarterback Lucas Barner Jr. and running back Dont'e Fox were named Co-Offensive MVP's for the team. Barner threw a team leading 1667 yards and 11 touchdowns and also averaged 208.4 passing yards per game. Fox lead the team with 139 rushes and ran for a team leading 608 yards to go with an average of 60.8 rush yards per game. Fox also tallied three total touchdowns for the Saints and was named the team's Offensive Back as well.

SHU's Defensive MVP and Defensive Back MVP was Safety, Da'vonte Price. Price led the team in interceptions (4) for 46 return yards, including one interception return for a touchdown. While leading team with 65 tackles he added two pass-breakups, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick.

Jordan Riley was the Special Teams MVP. Riley returned 20 kickoffs for 597 including a school record 100-yard return for a touchdown in the season finale against top-ranked Marian. He finished ranked fourth in the NAIA for kick-off return yards per attempt (29.900).

Linebackers Hunter Bagley and Martin Giannola along with quarterback Nick Gilliam all won the Jim Lyall Champion of the year award.

D.J. Haskins and Malik Edwards were named offensive line and defensive line MVP's, respectively. Edwards led the team with 5.5 sacks for a loss of 28 yards while also tallying 33 total tackles, three pass break-ups, two quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and hauled in an interception for the SHU defense.

Wide Receiver MVP for SHU was senior Curtis Smith Jr. Smith hauled in 26 receptions for 362 yards and three touchdowns while adding 72 rush yards and two touchdowns on 10 rushes. He also added 56 kick return yards on four returns.

E.J. Shaah along with Yeloushan were named as Co-Linebacker MVP's.  Shaah tallied 54 total tackles, two sacks, a pass break-up, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a blocked kick on the season.

Brady Tanguay, Braelen Bader, Cha'Quan D. Love, and Izayah Newsom were all named Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America. To qualify for this honor, the athlete must be a sophomore in academic standing, have an accumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better and participate in at least fifty percent of the season. 

Darius Price along with Da'vonte Price and Riley were named to the All-MSFA Mideast First Team while sophomore wide receiver Deontae' Rush along with Yeloushan were named to the All-MSFA Mideast Second Team. Love, Edwards and Smith were recognized as All-MSFA Mideast Honorable Mention.

Sixteen athletes were honored on the Mid-States Football Association All-Academic team, these athletes consisted of; Kyler Hubbs, Stefan Wilkinson, Cordell Crosby, Brad Harrah, Zachary Flack, Ronnie Giles Jr, Jesse Stires, Logan Waller, Vince Pospisil, Kris Grodi, Tanguay, Riley, Giannola, Love, Bader and Newsom.
