Football Volunteers During Bye Week at Lenawee Medical Care

The Siena Heights football team used its bye week to the fullest potential by volunteering at the Lenawee Medical Care Facility, Tuesday through Thursday.

SHU woke up early to take on a 6 a.m. practice every morning to be available to volunteer at 4 p.m., the usual practice time. While at the facility, the Saints visited with about 30 different residents each day they went.

Many of the residents are in their late 80s or early 90s and wheelchair confined. Head coach Matthew Kohn reflected, "It was incredible how mentally sharp all the residents were and how they were able to relate with college football players."

The athletes played cards, board games and went on walks with the residents while enjoying each other's company. Coach Kohn said, " Many of the residents do not get many visitors, so they seemed to really enjoy the company of a younger, energetic crowd."

Siena Heights looks to next weekend, Saturday, Oct. 8, to host second-ranked Saint Francis (Ind.) for the Annual SHU Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
