Schaller and Rush Lead SHU Football to Season-Opening Victory Over LUB

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Quarterback Garrett Schaller and wide receiver Deontae Rush each scored two touchdowns for the Siena Heights football team in a 31-16 victory over Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) on Saturday. The Saints hosted the Lynx in the first Mid-States Football Association Mideast League contest of the season.

Schaller finished with two carries, both resulting in a touchdown. Rush ended with four catches, including two touchdowns for the Saints.

Lucas Barner Jr. ended the day going 14 for  23, throwing for 235 total yards. He also had 12 carries, resulting in a 35 yard overall gain.

Damon Wright Jr. and Barner connected five times for 75 yards.

Defensively, Nate Yeloushan led the Saints with six solo tackles and three assisted tackles, including one sac for a seven yard LUB loss. Yeloushan recorded an interception and a 19 yard run for SHU. Also for the Saints, Raymond Williams Jr. earned four solo tackles and five assisted tackles, including a sack for a 13 yard loss.

SHU picked up the lead early in the first quarter and never looked back. Schaller made a short five-yard run from the quarterback postion to put the Saints on the board.

With 6:01 remaining in the first quarter, Barner launched a pass to Rush who took it all-the-way, scoring an 80-yard touchdown.

Brady Tanguay made a 34-yard field to put the Saints up 17-0 going into the second quarter.

For the Lynx (0-1, 0-1), Devon Williams scored the lone points in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run. SHU led 17-7 heading into halftime.

Siena Heights responded in the third with another Barner to Rush connection, ending in a 26-yard touchdown pass.

With 8:55 remaining in the fourth quarter, Schaller made an 11-yard touchdown run for the Saints. Tanguay made his fourth extra point of the night to give the Saints a 31-7 lead.

Two last-minute efforts for the Lynx included a Micha Aschemenn touchdown reception from Chris Henington and a team safety, but it was too little too late. SHU took the game 31-16.

Lindenwood-Belleville quarterback Darrien Boone ended the day 17 of 29 for 188 yards, also throwing four interceptions. Aschemann caught six passes for 85 total yards.

Running back Darrien Boone had 15 carries for 30 total yards.

On defense, Adnan Al-Amami earned four solo tackles and seven assisted tackles to lead the Lynx with 11 total tackles.

The Saints held a 235-194 advantage in the air over the Lynx.

Siena Heights (1-0, 1-0) will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they travel to Missouri Baptist for an MSFA Mideast League match-up on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. EST.
