Barner Surpasses 400-Yard Mark in Football's Loss to Saint Ambrose

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Quarterback Lucas Barner Jr. threw for 416 yards, but five turnovers led to the Siena Heights football team's 20-19 loss to Saint Ambrose in a Mid-States Football Association crossover game on Saturday.

Barner completed 32 of 51 passes and threw for one touchdown and two interceptions for SHU (3-5).

Two wide receivers -- Curtis Smith Jr. and Reggie Blackmon -- eclipsed the 100-yard mark. Smith had 11 grabs for 158 yards while Blackmon finished with eight for 129. Blackmon also had a touchdown run.

Running back D'aries Davis had 14 carries for 65 yards. Wide receiver Aaron Doriot added a touchdown catch.

For the Saints' defense, linebacker Nate Yeloushan totaled 12 tackles and a forced fumble/recovery. Defensive back Da'vonte Price made nine tackles, including one sack. Bobby Upshaw Jr. and Tyaire Bragg also had sacks.

The Saints trailed for most of the day, facing a 20-9 first-half deficit. Kicker Brady Tanguay, who was 2 of 4 on field goals, connected on a 28-yard kick in the first quarter. In the second, Doriot brought in a nine-yard scoring reception from Barner.

During the third quarter, the Saints trimmed their deficit to 20-19 -- first getting a 24-yard field goal from Tanguay. Blackmon added a seven-yard TD run.

Siena Heights had four opportunities to take the lead after that, but fumbled one drive away before punting on another. Tanguay missed a 41-yard field-goal attempt with 3:53 remaining.

Then, Barner nearly rallied the team before he was intercepted by SAU defensive back Joe Marconi at the Fighting Bees' 20-yard line with nine seconds left.

Marconi had two interceptions and a forced fumble for Saint Ambrose (6-2). Defensive back Trey Winberg and linebackers Chris Keitel and Sean Murphy recorded nine tackles apiece. Defensive end Harrison Hale added a sack and fumble recovery.

For the Bees' offense, quarterback Patrick Smith was 8 of 18 for 145 yards and two scores. Wide receiver Brad Connor was the recipient of those touchdowns, recording four catches for 117 yards. Kicker Matt Cotiguala made a pair of field goals.

The Saints will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 7, with an MSFA crossover game against Trinity International (Ill.).
