Football Struggles to Contain #9 Saint Francis (Ind.)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Siena Heights football team suffered a 49-25 loss to ninth-ranked Saint Francis (Ind.) in a Mid-States Football Association Mideast League game on Saturday.

Quarterback Travis Zajkowski completed 28 of 43 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns while running back D'aries Davis accumulated 73 yards on nine carries for the Saints (2-3, 2-2).

Wide receiver Curtis Smith Jr. added 10 receptions for 89 yards and a TD. Fellow wide-out Aaron Doriot contributed six catches for 66 yards. Running back Ronnie Giles Jr. had a touchdown reception.

On defense, defensive back Da'vonte Price and linebacker Angelo Whittis recorded 11 and 10 total tackles, respectively. Defensive back Cha'Quan D. Love made nine tackles and recovered a fumble.

Defensive lineman Michael Vella finished with 1 1/2 sacks and a fumble recovery. Defensive lineman Bobby Upshaw Jr. forced a fumble, defensive back DeShawn Gilbert had an interception and defensive lineman Malik Edwards was credited with a half-sack.

The host Cougars (6-0, 4-0) took the lead on their first possession and never looked back, scoring on a 1-yard run by running back Aaron Harris.

After a 33-yard field goal by SHU kicker Brady Tanguay, USF pushed its lead to 14-3 on a 58-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Ferrer to wide receiver Cam Smith.

The Saints answered with nine consecutive points -- a 23-yard kick from Tanguay and a 26-yard TD hookup from Zajkowski to Smith -- to close their deficit to 14-12.

From there, Saint Francis expanded its lead to 28-12 before halftime and held its lead in double-digitis the rest of the way.

Cougar running back Tirone Young had 25 carries for 128 yards and three TDs. Ferrer was 11 of 25 for 225 yards and two scores. Smith finished with four catches for 130 yards and a score. Wide receiver Seth Coate added a touchdown reception.

For the USF defense, linebacker Piercen Harnish came through with 10 tackles, including 1 1/2 sacks. Defensive lineman Karrington Thompson added nine tackles, which included three sacks.

As a team, Saint Francis rushed for 227 yards while SHU had 64.

The Saints will return to action when they host Taylor (Ind.) in their homecoming game at O'Laughlin Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m.
