Football Suffers First Loss To Concordia

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights football team suffered a 28-27 loss to Concordia in Mid-States Football Association Mideast League action on Saturday at O'Laughlin Stadium.

The Saints led by 20 before the visiting Cardinals stormed back with 28 second-half points. CUAA scored a pair of touchdowns early in the fourth quarter, taking the lead with 10:11 remaining and holding the rest of the way.

SHU running back D'aries Davis ran for two touchdowns while quarterback Nick Gilliam passed for a pair of scores.

Gilliam completed 26 of 37 throws for 296 yards. He threw two interceptions -- both in the fourth quarter. Wide receiver Reggie Blackmon had eight receptions for 90 yards and one TD. Fellow wide-out Aaron Doriot made seven catches for 69 yards and a score while Damon Wright Jr. compiled six grabs for 44 yards.

Running back Dont'e Fox was SHU's leading rusher, finishing with 23 carries for 83 yards.

Linebacker Nate Yeloushan led the Siena Heights defense with 12 total tackles, including 3 1/2 tackles-for-loss. He also made one fumble recovery on a strip-sack by defensive lineman Marcus Rhea.

Linebacker Angelo Whittis added 10 total tackles, including 1 1/2 sacks. Defensive back DeVonte Malcom recorded a half-sack and fellow DB Da'vonte Price blocked a field goal.

A 22-yard hookup from Gilliam to Doriot gave the Saints a late 6-0 lead in the first half, but a missed extra-point after that TD would prove costly in the end.

Davies ran in his two touchdowns in the third quarter as SHU grabbed a 20-0 advantage.

Concordia then answered with a pair of touchdowns: quarterback Seth Suida found wide receiver Herman Mason for a 44-yard TD through the air and then running back Ashton Gray scored from 16 yards out.

Blackmon had a three-yard touchdown reception late in the third as Siena Heights extended its lead to 27-14.

CUAA's two key scores in the fourth quarter came on a 3-yard TD pass from Suida to wide receiver Corey Turner and then a go-ahead 58-yard touchdown toss from Suida to Kevin Brown-Bayko.

With Concordia holding a one-point lead, SHU's final three possessions ended as such: field-goal block, interception, interception.

Suida led the way for the Cardinals (2-1, 1-0), completing 12 of 26 passes for 276 yards and three TDs. He also recorded 30 carries for 95 yards on the ground.

Mason had four receptions for 131 yards while Brown-Bayko made three receptions for 87 yards.

For the Cardinal defense. linebacker Ty Peterson had 12 total tackles, including 2 1/2 for-loss (one sack). Fellow LB Andrew O'Hara finished with 10 total stops, including three for-loss.

Defensive backs DeMarcus Bunn and Nick Holshoe had interceptions; Holshoe's catch sealed the CUAA win. Holshoe also blocked SHU's fourth-quarter field-goal attempt.

Both defenses had 13 tackles-for-loss each. Concordia outgained Siena Heights, 447-401. The teams combined for 226 penalty yards.

The Saints (2-1, 2-1) will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26, with an MSFA crossover game at nationally-ranked Saint Xavier (Ill.).
