Baseball Splits at Lawrence Tech to Conclude Regular Season

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team concluded the regular season by splitting at Lawrence Tech for the second day in a row in double-header action. The Saints fell in game one but then bounced back in game two. Up next, the Saints will find out who they will play in the WHAC Tournament. The Tournament will start next Wednesday, May 1st. 

Game One: Lawrence Tech 8, Siena Heights 7 

Leading the Saints at-bat in game one were both Cole VanWasshenova and Thomas Bakoway going 2-for-3 at the plate. VanWasshenova hit three RBIs while Thomas Bakoway hit one. On the mound, Luc Olson pitched five innings forcing one strikeout. 

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively until the Saints led the game scoring at the top of the third inning, as Brock Olmstead hit an RBI single to send Adam Wilding home. Later in the at-bat, Thomas Bakoway hit an RBI single to center field sending Cole VanWasshenova home to put the Saints up 2-0. Immediately in the bottom of the third, Lawrence Tech hit two home runs to tie the game at 2-2. 

In the fourth inning, Cole VanWasshenova hit a three-run home run to put the Saints up three at 5-2. Lawrence Tech then responded with a home run of their own as they pulled to within one at 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. 

At the top of the sixth inning, Adam Wilding hit a two-run home run to put the Saints back up three at 7-4. The Saints were unable to hold on as Lawrence Tech scored four consecutive runs to close out the game as the Saints lost a heartbreaker in game one. 

 

Game two: Siena Heights 8, Lawrence Tech 3 

Gino Hutchinson led the Saints at-bat in game two going 3-for-4 with one RBI. On the mound for the Saints was Kenny Layman, pitching seven innings and forcing five strikeouts facing 33 batters. Layman was credited for the win. Matt Love relieved Layman in the final two innings to force three strikeouts. 

In the top of the third inning after Lawrence Tech led 1-0. The Saints tied the game at one when Cole VanWasshenova hit an RBI single to send Brayden Hill home. Later in that at-bat, Brock Olmstead hit an RBI single to send Adam Wilding home to put the Saints up 2-1 after three innings. In the top of the fourth inning, Jacob Jackson hit a home run to put the Saints up by two at 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Lawrence Tech scored one run to pull within one at 3-2. 

At the top of the fifth, Jacob Jackson hit another RBI as he sent Thomas Bakoway home on an RBI single to put the Saints back up by two at 4-2. In the seventh inning, the Saints started to pile it on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils. Both Brayden Hill and Gino Hutchinson hit RBI singles to put the Saints up four at 6-2 after seven innings. In the top of the eighth inning, the Saints put Lawrence Tech away as both Jacob Jackson and Nick Tiller hit RBIs to end the scoring for the Saints to come out victorious. Lawrence Tech did hit a home run in the eighth inning, but it was not enough as the Saints were able to hold on to win game two, to split the series.
