Baseball Drops Two to Fort Lauderdale

LAKE WALES, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Fort Lauderdale on Monday at Warner.

The Saints (2-6) will return to action on Tuesday with a 10 a.m. contest against Calumet.

Game one: Fort Lauderdale 10, Siena Heights 7
Nick Tiller, Jacob Jackson and Aidan Grinstead had two-hit games for the Saints. Grinstead and Ty Schroeder doubled.

Chase Molnar started on the hill for SHU, working the first four innings and giving up eight runs on nine hits. He recorded three strikeouts and one walk.

Andrew Baum threw two innings of scoreless relief.

The Saints played catchup from the beginning after falling behind 4-0 in the first. Cole Van Wasshenova had an RBI single and Adam Wilding scored on a double-steal to help the Saints trim the deficit to 4-2.

Down 5-2 in the third, SHU erupted for five runs. Gino Hutchinson ripped a two-run single, Schroeder drove in a run with his double, Grinstead hit a sac fly and Wilding collected an RBI as the Saints went up 7-5.

Fort Lauderdale scored the next five runs, getting three in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Game two: Fort Lauderdale 6, Siena Heights 3
VanWasshenova went 2-for-4 with a homer. Kenny Layman added a double.

Garret Smith was the starter for SHU, allowing three earned runs on two hits. He had four strikeouts and five walks.

The Saints fell behind 3-0 before tying the contest at 3-all. Layman had an RBI double and Wilding hit an RBI single in the third. VanWasshenova connected for his dinger in the fifth.

Fort Lauderdale answered with two runs in its half of the fifth and then another run in the sixth.
