VanWasshenova's Clutch Hit Lifts Baseball to First Win of 2024

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Cole VanWasshenova ripped a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning and the Siena Heights baseball team held on for a 12-11 win over Valley City State in its first game in the Sunshine State.

VanWasshenova's two-run single completed SHU's comeback from a five-run deficit. The Saints had trailed 9-4 after VCSU plated eight in the top of the fourth inning.

VanWasshenova finished 2-for-5 and scored a run. Gino Hutchinson blasted a grand slam. Brayden Hill added a 2-for-5 game with a double and run scored while Cole Mason doubled and stole a base.

Andrew Baum was the winning pitcher, working three innings of shutout relief. He allowed one hit.

The Saints (1-2) benefitted from Valley City State miscues for their first four runs as three came in via passed ball or wild pitc in the first and one more came in via PB in the third as SHU took a 4-1 edge.

VCSU took the lead with its eight-run fourth before Hutchinson got some momentum back for Siena Heights with his grand slam in the bottom half of the fram.

In the fifth, Mason stole third and scored on an error on the play, tying the contest at 9-all.

A pair of VCSU runs in the sixth put the Vikings ahead 11-9. The Saints scored the game's final three runs.

Nick Tiller had an RBI groundout in the seventh and then VanWasshenova had his game-winning hit in the eighth.

The Saints will be back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Morningside.
