Baseball Breaks Out For 35 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of UM-Dearborn

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team enjoyed itself at the plate on Thursday as the Saints rolled to 24-6 and 11-3 wins over Michigan-Dearborn at Wayne State.

The 24-run effort was the highest offensive output by SHU since a 25-2 victory over Albion on March 24, 2009.

The Saints (6-19, 3-10) will play again on Saturday when they host Lawrence Tech for a 1 p.m. WHAC doubleheader.

 

Game one: SHU 24, UM-Dearborn 6

Adam Wilding led a 22-hit effort with a 4-for-6 game with a double, three runs and two RBI.

Cole VanWasshenova had four walks and four runs, Haydn Smith collected five RBI and Anthony Scali hit a pinch-hit grand slam.

Thomas Bakoway batted 3-for-6 with a double, three runs and two RBI. Nick Tiller was 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Smith had two hits and two runs. Matt Scally batted 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Scali, normally a pinch-runner for the catcher, Scally, replaced his teammate at the plate for the pinch-hit slam.

Matt Love scored twice and Brayden Hill had two RBI.

Crooked numbers appeared on the visitors' linescore in several innings. SHU had three in the second, eight in the third and six in both the sixth and seventh.

Brad South was the starting pitcher, throwing the first 3 1/3 innings before the Saints' bullpen turned in 3 2/3 of shutout ball.

John Miller went 2/3, Garret Smith threw two innings and Shilo Bernal Jr. pitched the seventh.

Smith was the winning pitcher as he retired six batters in two innings -- two via strikeout.

 

Game two: SHU 11, UM-Dearborn 3

Winning pitcher Ben Weadock allowed only one hit over five innings of work. He finished with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Tiller finished out a six-hit day with a 3-for-3 game with two runs and two walks.

Bakoway and Collin Bammer had two-run singles to help the Saints to a 5-0 lead.

Dearborn pulled within 5-3 in the seventh before the Saints rattled off the final six runs.

VanWasshenova had an RBI groundout and Cole Mason delivered a pinch-hit, RBI single.
