Baseball Drops Pair on Day Two of Warner Invite

LAKE WALES, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team dropped a pair of contests on the second day of the Warner Invitational on Friday. Scores were in favor of Saint Ambrose (Iowa), 7-3, and Saint Thomas (Fla.), 11-9.

SHU will return to action on Saturday with one more game against an opponent to-be-determined.

 

Game one: Saint Ambrose 7, SHU 3

Matt Love, Haydn Smith and Cole VanWasshenova finished with two-hit games for the Saints.

A two-run single by VanWasshenova helped SHU to a 2-0 lead. SAU tied the game with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Love delivered an RBI single in the sixth, tying the contest at 3-3.

The Fighting Bees took the lead for good in the sixth with back-to-back RBI doubles.

Brad South started on the mound for Siena Heights, giving up five earned runs on seven hits. He had four strikeouts and zero walks.

Ryan Sullivan pitched a scoreless inning of relief with one strikeout.

 

Game two: Saint Thomas 11, SHU 9

VanWasshenova and Kenny Layman had three hits apiece in the day's second game. VanWasshenova scored three times and Layman drove in four runs.

Brayden Hill added two hits and Cole Mason scored twice.

After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, the Saints erupted for the next six runs. Layman had an RBI single in the first and, then, SHU plated five runs in the second inning.

Mason ripped an RBI double and Haydn Smith tagged an RBI single before VanWasshenova tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single. Layman put the Saints ahead 6-4 with a two-run double.

Saint Thomas regained the lead with a three-run third inning and pushed the gap to 10-6.

The Saints closed the deficit to one run in the sixth. Mason scored on a wild pitch and Layman and Adam Wilding delivered RBI singles.

Saint Thomas tacked on an insurance run in the seventh for the game's final run.
