Baseball Falls To Host Warner, Nearly Rallies Back in Loss to Calumet

LAKE WALES, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team began play in the Warner Invitational on Thursday, suffering a 7-0 loss to host Warner and a 9-7 defeat to Calumet (Ind.).

The Saints (3-8) will continue play in the tournament on Friday with games against Saint Ambrose (Iowa) and Saint Thomas (Fla.).

Cole VanWasshenova and Collin Bammer had the only hits for Siena Heights as Warner pitcher Jeffery Almanzar fired a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Game two: Calumet 9, SHU 7

SHU scored five runs in the seventh, coming up just short after entering the inning down 9-2.

Haydn Smith had gotten the Saints started with a solo home run in the first, but Calumet quickly took the lead with a two-run first.

Wilding drove in a run during the third, tying the game at 2-2. The Crimson Wave then answered with a five-run third to take a 7-2 advantage.

Calumet added single runs in the fifth and sixth.

The Saints plated their first two runs of the seventh without a hit. Back-to-back walks opened the inning and then an error led to SHU's third run.

VanWasshenova drove in the next run via fielder's choice.

Down to their last out, the Saints rallied for three more runs. Jacob Jackson hit an RBI single, Parker Mabe had a bases-loaded walk and Matt Scally took one for the team with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. A strikeout of Smith ended the game.
