Baseball on Wrong End of Slugfest in Loss to Calumet

LAKE WALES, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team came out on the wrong end of a slugfest as it lost to Calumet (Ind.), 17-9, at neutral-site Warner on Monday.

Matt Love batted 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and one RBI for the Saints. Haydn Smith, Cole VanWasshenova and Brayden Hill added two-hit games.

Kenny Layman collected four RBI and VanWasshenova drove in three runs for the Saint offense. Both had doubles.

The Saints held a 7-6 edge after three innings. That lead held through two more frames before Calumet busted the game open with 11 runs over the final four innings.

Trailing 6-0, SHU erupted for a 5-run second inning. Love had an RBI single, VanWasshenova drew a bases-loaded walk and Layman crunched a 3-run double.

The Saints took their only lead at 7-6 with a 2-run third. VanWasshenova drew another bases-loaded walk and Layman followed with a sacrifice fly.

After that, the Crimson Wave plated four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to build a 14-7 lead. CCSJ continued with two in the eighth and one in the ninth.

The Saints scored their last two runs in the ninth -- one on an RBI double by VanWasshenova.

The same two teams will meet again Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Warner.
