Baseball Rips 17 Hits in Non-Conference Win over LTU

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team totaled 17 hits on Sunday as it opened its spring trip with a 12-9 non-conference win over Lawrence Tech.

Adam Wilding batted 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. Cole VanWasshenova, Kenny Layman (two doubles), Nick Tiller, Thomas Bakoway (double) and Brayden Hill added two-hit games for SHU.

Winning pitcher Aiden Nighswander threw 3 2/3 innings of relief, finishing with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Saints built a 12-4 lead and held off a late-inning rally by the Blue Devils.

The teams traded four-run innings early in the contest as Siena Heights plated four in the second and LTU tied the game in the third.

Hill had a two-run single and Matt Love and Haydn Smith followed with RBI singles in the second.

SHU regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Love. Bakoway added an RBI double in the fifth.

The Saints' biggest inning was their 5-run sixth. Layman had an RBI double, Wilding ripped an RBI single and, then, Hill, Cole Mason and Love drew bases-loaded walks.

VanWasshenova pushed across Siena Heights' final run in the eighth with an RBI single.

After that, Lawrence Tech scored twice in the eighth and three times in the ninth to pull within three runs. With two runners on and the tying run at the plate, relief pitcher Ryan Sullivan got the final two outs.

Brad South started on the hill for SHU, working 3 2/3 frames before giving way to Nighswander.

Siena Heights (2-3) will play again Monday against Calumet at neutral-site Warner. Opening pitch will be 10 a.m.
