Baseball Loses Pair at Midway

MIDWAY, Ky. -- The Siena Heights baseball team dropped a pair of contests to non-conference opponent Midway on Saturday. The Saints lost game one, 4-3, and then game two, 13-4.

SHU (1-3) will return to action on its spring trip to central Florida, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. non-conference game against Lawrence Tech on Sunday, Mar. 5.

Game one: Midway 4, Siena Heights 3

The Saints were unable to hold off the hosts after taking a 3-0 lead. Adam Wilding gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single before Haydn Smith tacked on a two-run single in the fifth.

Midway answered with two runs in its half of the fifth and then two more in the sixth. Walks haunted the SHU pitching staff as both fifth-inning runs reached via the free pass. Midway's go-ahead run was scored on a bases-loaded walk.

Smith led the SHU offense, going 2-for-2. Kenny Layman was the losing pitcher, allowing four hits in 4 1/3 innings. He was tacked for only one earned run while recording six strikeouts and three walks.

Game two: Midway 13, Siena Heights 4

SHU found itself playing catchup the entire way after falling behind 6-0 through the first two innings. The Saints came back with three in the third, but Midway quickly responded with four run in its half of the third.

Cameron Hammer plated SHU's first run with a sacrifice fly. Layman then blasted a two-run homer as the Saints trimmed their deficit to 6-3.

Siena Heights did not score again until getting an unearned run in the seventh.

Layman led the Saints' offense with a 3-for-4 game. He scored two runs, homered, doubled and drove in two runs.

Hammer went 2-for-2 and Cole Mason batted 2-for-4.
