Cole VanWasshenova Awarded NAIA Gold Glove Award at Third Base

KANSAS CITY – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), along with the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), has announced the 2022 ABCA-Rawlings NAIA Baseball Gold Glove Team. Siena Heights sophomore third baseman Cole VanWasshenova made the list of the nine best defensive players in the country.

"This is a great honor for Cole to be recognized for his outstanding season defensively at 3rd base," said SHU baseball coach John Kolasinski. "He was steady and reliable and made plays for us all year."

VanWasshenova was awarded a Gold Glove in May when the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced its yearly awards. The South Rockwood, Michigan product played in 51 games this season. He totaled 43 putouts and 80 assists while only having two errors for a .984 fielding percentage.

VanWasshenova is just the fourth SHU baseball player to receive a national gold glove honor. In addition, he was the only player from the WHAC to make the 2022 Gold Glove team.

The NAIA Gold Glove team is selected by the NAIA Baseball Coaches Association All-America Committee. Each of the nine members is chosen based on their defensive success. The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 11,000 members represent all 50 states and 25 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School, and Youth.
